India's Ageing Bridge Stock Needs Rehabilitation

Most national and state highway bridges in India were designed for IRC Class A or 70R loadings. Today's heavier commercial vehicles and the move toward 100T trailer loads make capacity upgrade essential. NHAI and state PWDs increasingly mandate bridge load testing and capacity certification — work Namotech has been doing for over 18 years.

Common Bridges Challenges We Solve

Across 85+ bridge projects with NHAI, PWD and various state highway departments, we encounter these typical challenges:

Capacity Upgrade Needs

Old bridges designed for 66T need certification for 100T trailer loads under modern IRC:6 standards.

Deck Deterioration

Waterproofing failure, expansion joint damage, and rebar corrosion in bridge decks reduce safe load capacity.

Scour & Foundation

River bridges face scour damage to pier foundations — requiring scour protection and foundation strengthening.

Bearing Failures

Old bridge bearings (elastomeric, POT-PTFE) seize or distort — restricting bridge movement and causing stress.

Reinforcement Corrosion

Chloride from de-icing salts and atmospheric exposure causes rebar corrosion in bridge decks and piers.

Load Test Verification

Government bodies increasingly require IRC SP:51-2015 load testing before opening bridges to upgraded loads.

Bridge Types We Rehabilitate

Our bridge expertise spans every major bridge type used in Indian infrastructure:

Highway Bridges

National & state highway bridges (RCC, PSC, composite)

ROBs / RUBs

Road-over-bridge & road-under-bridge structures

FOBs & Pedestrian Bridges

Foot-over bridges, sky-walks, pedestrian crossings

Culverts & Minor Bridges

Box culverts, slab bridges, minor bridges under 30m

Flyovers & Elevated

Urban flyovers, elevated corridors, viaducts

River Bridges

High-level bridges over major rivers with deep foundations

Rehabilitation Services for Bridges

Purpose

To establish current bridge condition through systematic inspection of superstructure, substructure, foundation, bearings, expansion joints and approaches — providing IRC-compliant condition rating.

What We Do

  • Visual inspection of all bridge elements per IRC SP:35
  • NDT — Rebound Hammer, UPV, Half-Cell on deck & piers
  • Concrete core testing for bridge concrete grade verification
  • Steel NDT for steel bridge components (UT, RT, MPT, DPT)
  • Bearing condition assessment & movement check
  • Expansion joint condition evaluation
  • Scour survey of pier foundations (river bridges)
  • Bridge condition rating report (IRC SP:35 format)

ROB Bandikui — 30m PSC Box Girder Load Test

Static load testing of 30m PSC box girder ROB at Bandikui per IRC SP:51-2015. Sequential loading using 4 fully-loaded trucks (64T total). Measured mid-span deflection of 6.2mm against theoretical 8.4mm — confirming higher stiffness than designed. Bridge certified for full HL-93 loads.
